BDO New Zealand has a strong culture, built on the principle that our people form the basis of everything we do. We seek people who are driven and who work towards the best interests of the team and the firm - passionate professionals who are keen to develop richer relationships, both internally and with our clients.
In today's ever-changing business environment, we understand the importance of being able to move with clients and support them in the new ventures and directions that they take. This also means that as the market changes, so do the needs of our people. We are responsive to these changes, ensuring that staff have the skills they need to take them to the next level.
BDO comprises over 111,000 people globally and generated US$11.8 billion last year. However, in New Zealand we are a collection of individually owned small to medium sized organisations, much like our clients. Our unique blend of close partner contact, and access to genuine industry and subject matter experts works well for our
As businesses grow, so do the challenges they face. Our Advisory team provides personalised services to our clients based on their unique needs and to meet the challenges at every stage of their life cycle. As business owners ourselves, we understand the importance of managing our client’s businesses, family and personal wealth simultaneously.
We take our time to get to know our clients really well, comparing where they are now with where they want to be, and taking a good look at how they are currently doing things so we can offer real value. One of the best bits about working for BDO is that you work with these clients from day one. This means you get to see and hear first-hand how the work we do helps our clients.
After completing my Accountancy degree at Otago University I decided to move home to Gisborne. The local office provided employment and the opportunity to finish my professional studies to become a Chartered Kylee Potae Accountant. During this time I worked in the audit team, and later was placed into a leadership role in an Advisory team. The offer of Partnership was a complete surprise, however as it aligned with my personal goals, I took the opportunity and have never looked back.
The main skill that I have learnt is that it is all about people. Whether clients or your team, you need to have the skills that allow you to relate to people from all walks of life. You also need the technical skills to get done what is required, however, without great people skills you may struggle. I have fine-tuned my people skills and still continue on that pathway. I have also focused my learning and development on my specialist market which is Māori Business.
"BDO comes to life for me through all the amazing people I meet within the network. We are a National team of passionate individuals who really care about our respective communities. I am fortunate to work alongside amazing people, within my own team in Gisborne, and in the wider network. When you put a call out for help, fellow BDO people are always there. We have fun and celebrate with our clients and are a dynamic whanau that is filled with people who have passion and dreams" - Kylee Potae
