  • Experienced Professionals

We have a lower professional staff to partner ratio than our major competitors, enabling more time for partners to be actively involved in the audit.

BDO has a focus on the future. This can often be seen as an oxymoron for auditors as we are usually so  focused on the past and historic performance. While it is important to report accurate historical performance, we believe that this can be done in a way that is future focused.

BDO’s sweet spot lies in the SME market, backing New Zealand led businesses.

Utilising world class audit methodology and a pragmatic approach, our audit teams provide real value to our clients across nearly all industries in the SME and larger sectors in NZ.  We service both for-profit and community focussed entities and use our global approach to provide quality services with a NZ context.  Our audit teams work collaboratively across NZ.

Our approach of a local firm combined with the skills and expertise of a large and international firm. We offer the best of both worlds – the personal relationship-driven approach of a local firm combined with the skills and expertise of a large and international firm.

Career Journey's

Richard Croucher, BDO   Ahmed Shaker, BDO Auckland   Felicitas Duelz, BDO Auckland

“After completing my law and commerce degrees at the University of Canterbury and working for 18 months in Christchurch, I moved to Napier. I had four interviews with the largest four firms in town and BDO stood out as being the right size and fit for me. I worked in the audit and business advisory teams for three years before moving to the UK to work and travel for two years. I used this time to gain experience in the much larger UK market and develop my audit and management skills. After regular contact with the BDO Partners in Napier, I returned to BDO when I moved home and was promoted to Associate after 14 months and Partner after another 15 months. That has always been a goal of mine so it was great to get this opportunity in such a short timeframe.”

More than a numbers machine

Sophia Fenwick's More than a Number's Machine Story

Sophia Fenwick’s player profile on the ANZ Netball Premiership website describes her as an “everimproving and reliable defender”.  Sophia has lined up for the Canterbury Tactix since 2019 and does so while continuing to work as a Senior Auditor for BDO Christchurch. “It is important to have the right balance in life. BDO Christchurch has provided me with the  flexibility to pursue my netball dream while continuing to foster my professional career for life after netball” says Sophia.
In particular, Sophia highlights why and how pursuing her two dreams has been an advantage.

  • Being a ‘semi-professional” netballer, it is not possible to only play netball, therefore havingother earnings is essential

  • Building a career outside of netball protects you from that one injury or non-selection, providing certainty and something to fall back on

  • Pursuing outside interests and being more than just an audit machine, improves empathy andunderstanding of our clients and their businesses

  • Transferrable skills from netball include dealing with people from different backgrounds, working as a team, always striving for high standards and delivering under pressure

  • Accounting has provided the necessary skills to serve as a member on the New Zealand Netball Players Association Board

Why BDO Audit?

“For me, BDO means a collection of offices that come together as one to provide the best possible infrastructure, support and advice. Even though each office is independent, Partners, associates and staff always make time to assist each other. Whether it be providing assistance in their area of expertise, or simply being there for a 5 minute phone call; to me BDO means we’re better together”
Matt Coulter, BDO Auckland

“Two things set BDO apart from other accounting firms; the people and the unique market space that BDO operates in. Our clients are all doing big and exciting things and here you get to be a part of it at every stage. All the way from graduate to manager level, you’re getting exposure to both BDO’s clients and the key business issues they present.”
Ahmed Shaker, BDO Auckland

BDO Audit Life

Backing the communities we work in, wherever it is needed, is an important part of doing business at BDO. This philosophy is aligned with the values that we maintain as a firm and our desire to make a positive and enduring difference.

Many BDO offices throughout New Zealand give their staff an additional day of paid leave to contribute to a local community cause that's important to them. This could mean collecting donations for a local cause, making meals at a hospital or cleaning up rubbish in the Hauraki Gulf. Every team member intention is valued and rewarded, whichever cause they choose to support.
