James leads BDO’s IFRS Advisory department, providing assistance and support to entities regarding the application of accounting standards as well as financial reporting disclosure requirements.

James also authors BDO's Cheat Sheet series which provides short plain English thought leadership on current accounting issues in practice. 

With roles in both commercial and private practice over the last 15 years, James has sat on “both sides of the fence”. This includes positions with BDO’s global accounting standards department in London, as well as the project lead for one of New Zealand’s largest companies regarding their adoption of new accounting standards.

This mix of experience allows James to bridge that gap between complex technical areas and pragmatic, practical outcomes. – an invaluable perspective for anyone who has had to deal with navigating the application of standards and regulations!

Currently, James’ focus has been on assisting a wide variety of entities from numerous sectors navigate the adoption of the new (“Big Three”) accounting standards, relating to Revenue, Financial Instruments, and Leases. In addition. James also undertakes various other consultation services for entities, including general advice, formal accounting opinions, in-house training, and financial statement review and updates.
