BDO Invercargill Supports Students in Sport

BDO Invercargill allocates its sponsorship commitments to fit within community, business, culture and sporting activities. A new sponsorship committed to in 2021 was to the Southland Secondary Schools Sport International Students Sports Day. The event is the brainchild of Southland Secondary Schools Sport Director, Fiona Ward, and is aimed at international students, whether they be temporary foreign fee-paying students or migrants new to our community, to provide the opportunity to participate in a global sport, have fun, and to mix with other international students and others in the local community. The Southland based event was a first for New Zealand and it is now being held in other regions.

With the assistance of the BDO Invercargill sponsorship, the 2021 event was held on 15 April, and 120 students, from 7 secondary schools, had the opportunity to participate in a range of sports, including badminton, basketball, futsal, pickleball, volleyball and squash. Students were from diverse countries of origin, from China, Colombia, Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia and Philippines.

The participation by the students was enthusiastic, to say the least, and broad smiles were on show all day. BDO Invercargill representatives, Karli Bugden and Tatiana Akhmatova presented BDO gear bags to participants from a lucky draw, and other students were recognised for their good sportsmanship and effort.

The event’s sponsorship has both a community and sporting connection, and it supports our BDO appreciation of diversity, integration and participation.
