From Canada to Christchurch: Jordyn’s BDO secondment story
When Jordyn VanEgmond stepped off the plane from Canada in May 2025, she knew exactly what she wanted to achieve from her secondment at BDO Christchurch. What she wasn’t expecting, was how much the opportunity would challenge her assumptions about work/life balance and her aspirations for her future career.
The secondment opportunity came through BDO’s global network, and while Jordyn had initially only planned to stay for four months, this was soon extended to a full year as she settled into the lifestyle that New Zealand offered.
Coming from an environment heavily focused on billable hours and intense busy seasons, she discovered a more balanced approach in New Zealand. Time to step away from work and genuinely recharge was not only encouraged, but expected, ultimately leading to better outcomes, both professionally and personally.
"It does seem more possible to get both. You work hard and there are trade-offs at times, but it doesn't seem as extreme."

One of Jordyn's most treasured aspects of the experience was the relationships she built with the team at BDO Christchurch. "I was so shocked that people at work were nice and kind and they just want to help you," she recalls. "It feels kind of like a family in a sense."
Secondments like the ones available at BDO offer unique opportunities, connecting professionals across continents and embedding a unique global perspective that benefits both individuals and firms. "I think it grows you and it teaches you a different way to think about things and shows you that the world isn't small."
Jordyn has now returned to BDO Canada in a more senior role, having gained the technical skills and international experience she expected, alongside a more balanced approach to work and life.
For anyone considering a similar path, her advice is unequivocal: "Do it and go all in. The goodbyes are going to be hard, but meet the people, put the effort into the friendships. Go and see all the places. You're only there for a short period of time. Don't waste your time being scared to do things."
