Graduate Career Stories- Assistant Manager Audit

Emily Calles, BDO Christchurch

Being born in Canada it is awesome to have the ability to go on secondment with BDO there.

What is your role at BDO? And how did you get there?

My current role at BDO is Audit Assistant Manager, I got here by studying a degree in Taxation and Accounting with a minor in Finance at Canterbury University. I started as a grad and worked my way up while studying my CA. My role involves a range of different clients from profits to not-for-profits, in a variety of different industries.

What interested you about doing a secondment with BDO?

Being born in Canada, I have always wanted to travel back there as an adult. Visiting via the secondment will allow me to sight see and experience the bigger city life, while still developing my career at BDO.

When did you first hear about a secondment opportunity?

I knew BDO had offered secondments all around the world in the past but that they had been on the back burner due to Covid. Coming into 2022, with life starting to get back to normal (or our new normal), I asked if there was the opportunity to do one. They were happy to help facilitate meetings with managers from the places I wanted to visit.

What does your secondment involve?

My secondment includes travel and accommodation to support me working out of Toronto - Bay City office from October 2022 to March 2023.
