Experienced professionals

Grow your future in our BDO whānau

BDO New Zealand has a strong culture, built on the principle that our people form the basis of everything we do. We seek people who are driven and who work towards the best interests of the team and the firm - passionate professionals who are keen to develop richer relationships, both internally and with our clients.

In today's ever-changing business environment, we understand the importance of being able to move with clients and support them in the new ventures and directions that they take. This also means that as the market changes, so do the needs of our people. We are responsive to these changes, ensuring that staff have the skills they need to take them to the next level.

BDO comprises over 111,000 people globally and generated US$11.8 billion last year. However, in New Zealand we are a collection of individually owned small to medium sized organisations, much like our clients. Our unique blend of close partner contact, and access to genuine industry and subject matter experts works well for our

Our service lines

As businesses grow, so do the challenges they face. Our Advisory team provides personalised services to our clients based on their unique needs and to meet the challenges at every stage of their life cycle. As business owners ourselves, we understand the importance of managing our client’s businesses, family and personal wealth simultaneously.

We take our time to get to know our clients really well, comparing where they are now with where they want to be, and taking a good look at how they are currently doing things so we can offer real value.  One of the best bits about working for BDO is that you work with these clients from day one. This means you get to see and hear first-hand how the work we do helps our clients.

Kylee Potae's career journey

After completing my Accountancy degree at Otago University I decided to move home to Gisborne. The local office provided employment and the opportunity to finish my professional studies to become a Chartered Kylee Potae Accountant. During this time I worked in the audit team, and later was placed into a leadership role in an Advisory team. The offer of Partnership was a complete surprise, however as it aligned with my personal goals, I took the opportunity and have never looked back.

The main skill that I have learnt is that it is all about people. Whether clients or your team, you need to have the skills that allow you to relate to people from all walks of life. You also need the technical skills to get done what is required, however, without great people skills you may struggle. I have fine-tuned my people skills and still continue on that pathway. I have also focused my learning and development on my specialist market which is Māori Business.

"BDO comes to life for me through all the amazing people I meet within the network. We are a National team of passionate individuals who really care about our respective communities. I am fortunate to work alongside amazing people, within my own team in Gisborne, and in the wider network. When you put a call out for help, fellow BDO people are always there. We have fun and celebrate with our clients and are a dynamic whanau that is filled with people who have passion and dreams" - Kylee Potae

We have a lower professional staff to partner ratio than our major competitors, enabling more time for partners to be actively involved in the audit. BDO has a focus on the future. This can often be seen as an oxymoron for auditors as we are usually so focused on the past and historic performance. While it is important to report accurate historical performance, we believe that this can be done in a way that is future focused.

BDO’s sweet spot lies in the SME market, backing New Zealand led businesses. Utilising world class audit methodology and a pragmatic approach, our audit teams provide real value to our clients across nearly all industries in the SME and larger sectors in NZ. We service both for-profit and community focussed entities and use our global approach to provide quality services with a NZ context. Our audit teams work collaboratively across NZ.

Our approach of a local firm combined with the skills and expertise of a large and international firm. We offer the best of both worlds – the personal relationship-driven approach of a local firm combined with the skills and expertise of a large and international firm.

“Two things set BDO apart from other accounting firms; the people and the unique market space that BDO operates in. Our clients are all doing big and exciting things and here you get to be a part of it at every stage. All the way from graduate to manager level, you’re getting exposure to both BDO’s clients and the key business issues they present.”
Ahmed Shaker, BDO Auckland

“After completing my law and commerce degrees at the University of Canterbury and working for 18 months in Christchurch, I moved to Napier. I had four interviews with the largest four firms in town and BDO stood out as being the right size and fit for me. I worked in the audit and business advisory teams for three years before moving to the UK to work and travel for two years. I used this time to gain experience in the much larger UK market and develop my audit and management skills. After regular contact with the BDO Partners in Napier, I returned to BDO when I moved home and was promoted to Associate after 14 months and Partner after another 15 months. That has always been a goal of mine so it was great to get this opportunity in such a short timeframe.”
Matt Coulter, BDO Auckland

LEARN MORE ABOUT TAX

Yavik Solanki's career journey

Yavik Solanki started as a graduate at BDO Auckland and is now a Partner in our CBD tax team. We had a chat to him about his time at BDO and what it is like working in a tax role within the firm.

What made you choose BDO and what has encouraged you to stay with the firm?

I joined BDO because I was looking for an opportunity to develop my career as a tax professional. Having studied both law and accounting at university, tax was an ideal option for me to explore the best of both worlds. I can honestly say building my career at BDO is one of the best decisions I have made. From when I started as a grad, I was given great support from my colleagues and presented with unique opportunities to undertake diverse and interesting work while enjoying my job along the way. We have a large team but we are unique in the sense that the opportunities are endless and you are able to gain a wide range of skills and experience to provide an “all round” knowledge of tax (rather than specialising in one particular area). In our team there are many opportunities for direct client contact and to be responsible for and manage your own client base. We also have regular training and exceptional senior staff and partners who have a wealth of knowledge to share and who I have learnt a great deal from over the years.

What do you enjoy most about working for BDO?

It’s hard to pick just one thing. The people, great clients and a wide variety of work have made BDO a great place to work. Not to mention all the fantastic social events that occur throughout the year!

What does working in a Tax role at BDO actually involve?

We have a wide variety of clients from high net worth individuals to SME’s, private equity funds and NZX/ASX listed clients. Each of whom have their own unique tax issues. The work is always interesting and challenging and includes compliance work such as tax return preparation, year-end tax calculations and deferred tax and consulting work including structuring advice, mergers and acquisitions and tax due diligence. Every day is different and you never know what is around the corner. That is what makes tax so interesting.
